Japan’s Prime Minister Sane Takachi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has secured an overwhelming majority in the House of Representatives election held on Sunday.
According to BBC reports, the LDP-led coalition won 352 out of 465 seats in Japan’s lower house. The LDP alone secured 316 seats, comfortably crossing the majority threshold.
Japan’s House of Representatives consists of 465 members, and such a strong result in the lower house also strengthens the government’s position in the upper house, where a two-thirds majority can ensure smooth governance.
The opposition alliance suffered a heavy defeat, dropping from 167 seats to just 49. After the victory, Prime Minister Takachi said she would move forward with her policies to make Japan stronger and more prosperous.
Following the election results, U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Takachi on her victory. Before the election, she had stated that she would resign if her party failed to secure a majority.
Takachi, who is highly active on social media, appears to have successfully attracted young voters. Her campaign focused on increasing government spending, tax cuts, stricter immigration policies, and national security.
This result is being described as one of the best performances by a political party in post-war Japan. Reflecting market optimism, Japan’s Nikkei index surged by over 5% when the stock market opened on Monday, briefly crossing the 57,000 mark before settling at a 4.7% gain. Analysts linked the rise to both the election result and the recent rally in U.S. markets.
