Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize winner and prominent women’s rights activist, has been sentenced to six years in prison by an Iranian court.
Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said the court found her guilty of organizing gatherings linked to anti-government protests and participating in activities considered criminal by the authorities. In addition to the six-year sentence, Mohammadi received an extra 18 months in prison for what the court described as propaganda activities. She has also been banned for two years from traveling to Khosf city in South Khorasan Province.
According to Iranian law, the prison term and travel restriction will be enforced together. Her lawyer expressed hope that she may be granted temporary release on bail for medical treatment due to her ongoing health issues. He also noted that the verdict is not final and can be appealed.
Over the past 25 years, 53-year-old Mohammadi has faced repeated arrests and trials for campaigning against Iran’s use of the death penalty and mandatory dress code for women. In recognition of her activism, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023.
Mohammadi has spent much of the past decade in prison and has not been able to meet her twin children living in Paris since 2015. Even while incarcerated, she has continued to protest for women’s rights, prisoners’ treatment, and basic human rights, including staging hunger strikes despite serious health impacts.
