Gas imports from Iran to Iraq have come to a complete halt following an attack on a major Iranian natural gas facility, raising concerns over a potential energy crisis. Iraqi media, citing the electricity ministry, confirmed the disruption.
Spokesperson Ahmed Mousa said the supply stoppage was caused by regional tensions and damage to Iran’s gas infrastructure. Iraq relies on Iran for more than one-third of its total gas and electricity needs, making the halt a serious concern for power generation.
The attack reported by Iranian media hit the largest natural gas field in the world, the South Pars Gas Field, which is shared by Qatar as well. No casualties were reported; still, geopolitical tensions have been heightened by the strike.
Iranian media have pointed fingers at the United States and Israel, cautioning that they might strike back at their energy facilities throughout the area.
