Sanath Jayasuriya has announced his intention to step down as head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team following the team’s disappointing campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Sri Lanka’s exit was confirmed after a narrow five-run defeat against the Pakistan national cricket team in the Super 8 stage. Despite playing the tournament at home as co-hosts, Sri Lanka failed to meet expectations and lost all their Super 8 matches. The team had earlier qualified as runners-up from Group B but struggled with injuries throughout the tournament.

Speaking after the match, Jayasuriya said he believes it is time for someone else to take responsibility. He admitted he had hoped to end his tenure on a positive note with a strong World Cup performance, but the outcome did not go as planned.

Although his contract runs until June, Jayasuriya revealed that he has not yet officially informed Sri Lanka Cricket about his decision. He said he would soon discuss the matter with the board and step aside if a suitable replacement is found.

He also apologized to fans, acknowledging that supporters had expected at least a semifinal finish.
